Here is a random list of ways to prepare for a Sukkot camping trip. I apologize if this isn’t very eloquent. It’s truly a brainstorming list of ideas!
Tips and Ideas:
- Animals – put food away at night, keep campsite clean, watch sweet foods and bees, bring a fly swatter, use airtight containers for food, do not eat inside your tent or cabin (!!), bring garbage bags, dispose of all garbage in dumpsters before bed, bring a dust pan and dust broom.
- A rug at the entrance to your tent/cabin is nice.
- Crocs and plastic sandals are awesome in wet weather.
- Extra blankets and towels – just bring lots!
- First Aid – bring bandaids for blisters and boo-boos, triple antibiotic, essential oils (thieves, lavendar, frankincense, peppermint), Benadryl, liquid bandaid, herbal skin balms (comfrey, etc.)
- Cleaning – paper towels, baby wipes, two plastic tubs for washing dishes, dish drainer, bucket for carrying water, plenty of dish cloths and dish towels, steel wool for cast-iron skillets and stuck-on food, clothes line and clothespins.
- Cooking – We prefer a propane stove, with tank of propane or small camping-size tanks of propane, a teapot (useful for making dish water hot, beyond coffee and tea), skewers for shishkabobs and s’mores, hot pads, aluminum foil, ziplock bags, tongs, tablecloth, plastic plates; Be sure to disconnect propane tank right after cooking so that you don’t use up all your propane.
- Food – bring salt and pepper and simple seasoning blends; make a menu! Try to stick with meals that have few ingredients and that you have tried before. Don’t try cooking a brand-new meal your first time camping! Prep (chop, etc) as much as you can before the camping trip.
- Lawn chairs — enough for each person plus a couple extra for visitors to your campsite.
- Clothing – bring layers, and jackets, and sweatshirts, and hats, and gloves, and ways to stay dry in the rain, wool socks for getting into a cold bed at night
- Organize your gear into plastic totes — I recommend keeping your camp kitchen gear in one bin, including your camp stove, plates, cutting boards, and propane tanks. Keep your tent and sleeping gear in a separate bin with your lanterns and other accessories.
- Arrive early enough, before dark, to get your bedding and kitchen supplies set up, to find your way around, especially the bathrooms.
- Cook supper 1-2 hours before sundown, so there is time to cook, eat, and completely wash up dishes and campsite before dark.
- Plan ahead for Sabbath, when we are not to kindle a fire. Sukkot is supposed to help us remember what it was like for the children of Israel when they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, and not lighting a fire on Sabbath would have definitely affected them. Thermoses for coffee, simple foods that don’t require cooking, and a shared meal for the congregation after Sabbath service — these are all special challenges! Chilis and soups made ahead on Friday and put into the Instant Pot are one possibility, as well as desserts, trays of vegetables and cheese, bags of chips, etc.
- Sleeping – earplugs are helpful with weird campground noises, a fan and/or space heater (be safe!), heavy-duty, long extension cords, sleeping pad to help with hard bunk beds or sleeping on the ground, enough warmth (extra blankets), easy slip-on shoes for night trips to bathroom, flashlight, string lights to make it pretty.

- Burgers, hot dogs
- Sloppy Joes or Made-Rite sandwiches
- Cheesesteak sandwiches
- Chicken fettuccine alfredo
- Kielbasa, potatoes, veggies
- Chili, White chicken chili
- Pasta primavera*
- Salads of all sort (chicken salad, egg salad, macaroni salad with hard-boiled eggs, etc.)
- Stir fry (rice in Instant Pot)
*Nachos: What could be easier than loading a Dutch oven full of tortilla chips, melty cheese, black beans, salsa, and all your favorite nacho toppings and calling it dinner?!

Lunch Ideas – Deli sandwiches, Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches, Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
Chopped veggies, fruit, and sometimes some cheese curds or string cheese, cheese slices, pudding.
Breakfast Ideas – Bagels and cream cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs with cheese and potato slices, zucchini bread (made ahead), egg burritos, hard-boiled eggs.
