Yesterday our pastor preached from Luke 24. I was struck especially by verses 44-45: “Jesus said to [the disciples], ‘This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.’ Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.”
I often feel proud of my biblical knowledge, yet my knowledge doesn’t even compare to that of the Pharisees in Jesus’ day, who knew all the prophecies of the coming Messiah. Yet until Jesus “opened their minds,” it was impossible for anyone to understand the Scriptures and how He was its fulfillment. Why would I think that this is no less true today? Can merely reading the Bible give me the light I need to live? No, He must still open my mind so that I can understand.
Lord Jesus, please open my mind! Supernaturally illuminate Your Word by your Spirit. Don’t let me become a Pharisee — a blind leader of the blind.
