In a Season of Change

Our Home - Winter 2013

“Your word, YHWH, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you” (Psalm 119:89-91). At the breakfast table, my husband has been reading one section each morning from Psalm 119. Yesterday morning, [...]

Spring Cleaning My Father’s House

other cleaning for Passover

It’s the day before Passover. The children run through the house, pleased that the days of cleaning are over. Tomorrow is a special day, no school and no work, gathering with friends.

I wipe my hands on my apron and retwist the knot in my hair, since everything is falling out of the clip under my dusty bandana.

I look around my spotless kitchen. My critical eye judges everything in sight. The kids will be back soon, looking everywhere to see if we missed a crumb or bit of yeast. They think it’s fun to find a crumb we’ve overlooked. But we worked so hard the last few days, and I’m tired. I hope we got it all out.

My Anxious Thoughts

This week, a friend of mine reminded me of a verse describing the woman of valor in Proverbs 31: “Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come” (Proverbs 31:25, KJV). I’ve been thinking about this verse ever since. When life is uncertain, when I don’t know what the future [...]

What’s So Bad about Bacon?

Is it a sin to eat bacon?

A friend recently asked, “Is it a sin to eat bacon?”

A debate raged in my mind. She knew that our family didn’t eat pork, and I knew she didn’t agree, but neither was she trying to be rude. She was asking what I honestly thought.

On the other hand, her relatives worked for a major pork processing plant here in southern Minnesota, and I knew that if her family changed their opinion of eating pork, there would be major financial ramifications.

Was it really such a big deal if she ate a little bacon? Was it worth a big fight?

And then my conscience added, “Does it really matter, Anne, what you think? Don’t you think you should tell her what God thinks?”

When God Moves

Last November, my husband resigned his position as pastor of a small Baptist church in southern Minnesota. In the next few weeks, we’ll be moving our family to a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota, to start a new life. Our move has brought about a lot of questions, so I thought I’d write a post [...]

Building My Father’s Kingdom

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the purpose of my life. Yeah, I know. Deep stuff. Seriously, though, I can just go about my tasks each day — homeschooling, cooking, laundry, errands, phone calls — and days slip by without ever feeling like I’m going anywhere. “Teach us to number our days aright,     that [...]

Let’s Be Realistic

I’ve been pondering something all week. I’ve been asking myself if I intentionally follow God or not. You see, a friend commented to me, “Anne, sometimes your blog comes across like you’re perfect, but now that I’ve gotten to know you, I realize you’re not. You’re normal just like the rest of us.” !!! I [...]
